Hot Wheels, those toy cars you find in every supermarket, newsagents and 'we sell everything' style discount shops all across the country. Well I love them!
Its a recent turn of events, I've never really paid much attention to those little blister backs in the past and thought them to be simply a cheap toy, as most people do. Things have changed now that I've realised the fun to be hunting down those little cars and finding something I've not seen before, or something that I just like the look of.
It started about a month ago when a random bout of nostalgia had me bidding on a toy I had as a kid, and as far as i can remember, everyone else had one too. That toy was the 1989 Batmobile from the orginal Batman movie, made by Ertl. I don't remember exactly why I was searching for one, but I ended up purchasing one still in its original packaging. From that moment on, I was hooked on collecting diecast cars.
At first, I was just looking to collect Batmobiles that were around the same scale as the Ertl version I'd bought (1:64) - but while searching around for any sort of checklist that I could use I began to realise that collecting Hot Wheels, present day, £1, get them everywhere Hot Wheels - was a big deal to alot of people.
I read how there are certain models of car that are produced in a (slightly) smaller quantity known as Treasure Hunts (TH's), and even rarer models known as Super Secret Treasure Hunts ($upers), mixed in with all the other regular cars. The knowledge that there was some sort of secret, hidden in plain sight, collectible versions of these little toy cars sitting on the shelves just waiting to be found sparked something in me. From that moment, I've been hunting those little buggers ever since.
Now, the fascination with TH's didn't last too long, because I realised that alot of those cars (I found a few in my first couple of days) were of the variety specifically aimed at children. I'm talking about cars in the shape of animals, blinding colours and generally just 'fantasy' models. I had decided I wanted to collect cars that were realistic or featured in Television/Movies that I was a fan of.
So here we are, I've collected around 50 cars so far, and will be giving my thoughts and sharing some pictures on this blog for the next while, until my middle aged brain takes me on another tangent :-)
